about us
Whangarei Steam & Model Railway Club operates in Heritage Park, Maunu, Whangarei.
Our members meet most Monday and Friday mornings from around 9 o'clock to undertake maintenance on the tracks, trains and vital equipment. Newcomers are always welcome, and do not need to bring any special skills with them beyond being sociable and willing to muck in. It is a flexible commitment with no requirement to attend every working day. On running days we need a fairly full attendance of members to ensure we can offer rides on the train, the trams and the jiggers. We also need people to keep our visitors safe, show them around and tell them something of the history of rail in NZ. Suitable training in these areas would be given as necessary
Although initially railways were a male preserve, times have changed and we have both male and female members. Now one of our steam engine drivers is female, along with many of the staff who manage the platform, the ticket office and our stall selling ice-creams, snacks and soft drinks on our running days.
In addition to the large trains we also have two rooms containing model railways. The Model Room itself has four layouts with a large variety of trains operating. In Hikurangi station itself there are tracks and buildings set up to represent the rail network through Te Kamo and Hikurangi. The area had many coal mines, and the railways were how the coal was distributed to the rest of the country. Although the mines are long gone there are still restrictions on building in some areas due to the underground mining excavations which can collapse without warning.
Our museum room (Kauri) is currently being refurbished, and when the work is complete will again show many items formerly used on NZ railways.
If you think you might enjoy being a club member then please contact us or just turn up one morning and introduce yourself. The annual subscription is $30, but you don't have to pay on your first few visits.
